A mile, a kilometer, a year: hand-pulled glass coiled into vitrines

Ginsberg gathers molten glass on a rod, pinches it, and walks drawing our 25’-50’ strands of glass. His body sets the pace. The strand cools almost instantly into a flexible line, then individually coiled into a box that records a distance walked. The strands resemble optical fiber, the glass that carries communication across oceans unseen; here that line is held in view. Measures rooted in the human body—the foot and mile—meet the meter, defined by the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second.. Each box holds both kinds of time: hours of walking for the body, millionths of a second for light.

The thickness of each strand depends on the heat of the glass and the pace of the walk. Tuning that cadence lets the strands bend into a circle within the box
Where a strand is even microscopically off, it breaks, revealing the tension every strand holds, like a spring ready to give.
