Each panel is made through optical contacting, a process developed for precision optics and deep space, where adhesives would cloud the glass or fail under pressure. Two sheets of commercial float glass, the material of everyday windows, are brought together until they bond through molecular attraction alone. Where the surfaces truly meet, they fuse into dark, inky islands. Where microscopic undulations hold them apart, a layer of air one wavelength thick stays trapped between them, and under light it resolves into Newton rings: concentric bands of spectral color, like oil on water, mapping a landscape the eye normally can't see. The series is Justin Ginsberg's first body of work in industrial float glass after years of hand-formed hot glass. It carries his long study of distance down to its smallest possible scale.
